Newly appointed Brazil women’s national basketball team head coach Pokey Chatman will not lead the squad during the “Brazil Tour in the WNBA,” sources told Beta Basket. The reason is the same rule that prevents Kamilla Cardoso and Damiris Dantas from playing for the national team.
Brazil is set to face the Chicago Sky on May 2 and the Indiana Fever on May 4. Both WNBA teams feature a Brazilian player—Cardoso and Dantas—but even when Brazil plays the team they are not signed with, they will not be permitted to play for the national team.
Because the games are official WNBA preseason matchups, players may only represent the teams they are under contract with. The rule also applies to coaching staff, and Chatman currently serves as an assistant coach and associate general manager for the Seattle Storm.
